Patches of darker toning are noted around the border on the obverse and reverse and a few light toning spots can be seen centrally. Under strong magnification, there is a tinge of green beneath the bow. Super clean surfaces are virtually devoid of contact marks even when observing the piece with strong magnification. Most extant specimens which have been assigned a red and brown designation like this coin do not have anywhere near the copious amounts of mint red that this coin bears. PCGS 72, NGC 19, CAC 18. The valuation in the PCGS Price Guide is $2,750. The most recent sale of a CAC graded piece was in December 2021 for $2,520. A mere 100,000 pieces were coined of the large cent denomination and legend has it that perhaps the scant quantity of survivors is due to the coins being tossed into active volcanoes as a sacrifice or gift.
