- Impressive New York Sanitary Fair Medalet in Silver
Struck over an 1858 Canada 20 Cents
Circa 1864 New York Sanitary Fair medalet. Musante GW-673, Baker-362, Fuld NY630BJ-1fo. Rarity-9. Silver. MS-63 (PCGS).
23.8 mm. Struck over an 1858 Canada 20 cents. Medium silver gray surfaces with soft slate toning in the obverse fields while flecked lighter silver remains on the portrait and in some of the recesses close to the rim. The reverse is lighter silver with faint mottling of deeper gray. Lustrous on both sides and nicely struck. Well centered on the host and with good detail. Conveniently, the best seen artifacts of the host coin are the distinctive “20 CENTS” and date on the reverse that made identifying it fairly easy. As a one-year type coin, the Canada 20 cents is a really interesting undertype.
Provenance: Ex William Spohn Baker Collection, to the Historical Society of Pennsylvania by bequest, November 15, 1897.
