Tied for Finest Graded at PCGS
Population: 2/0
1942-S Walking Liberty Half Dollar. MS-67+ (PCGS).
One of the finest certified, and undoubtedly also one of the very finest known for the issue, this 1942-S half dollar is a coin of extraordinary beauty that would be a significant addition to the finest cabinet. Both sides exhibit platinum-white brilliance in the centers. The obverse ringed in halos of gorgeous powder blue, pale pink and champagne-apricot peripheral toning, while the reverse is peripherally toned in more reserved golden-apricot. This incredible Superb Gem is silky smooth with bountiful mint frost, and sharp to full striking detail.
Trailing only the 1941-S, the 1942-S is the scarcest Walking Liberty half dollar "short set" issue in the finest Mint State grades. With a mintage of 12.7 million coins, the 1942-S half dollar is readily available in grades up through MS-65, but becomes incredibly rare at the Superb Gem level. Furthermore, striking quality also presents a significant challenge, as a combination of die fatigue and inconsistent striking pressure resulted in poor detail and inferior luster even on many well preserved examples. This PCGS MS-67+ is superior in both respects, and it also offers outstanding visual appeal as a result of the toning. Tied for top pop honors at PCGS with just one other coin. An aggressive bidding strategy is recommended for collectors who desire to own this beautiful coin.
