- FROM THE UNFORGETTABLE COLLECTION Without a doubt, the Spanish Trail half dollar is one of the more interesting and obscure designs of the commemorative series. The cow skull on the obverse is a play on the name of Alvar Nunez Cabeza De Vaca, a Spanish explorer of the early southern portion of the United States in 1535, whose last name translates to "cow's head." Only 10,008 were struck, and it is one of the KEY types of the series. A fully brilliant mint luster swirls boldly on both sides accenting a blush of pearly gold. Virtually FLAWLESS, this SUPERB example has a great eye appeal. PCGS 225, NGC 129, CAC 77. PCGS has graded 41 in MS67+, a figure that no doubt includes some duplication. Only 10 are graded finer. The current PCGS Price Guide value is listed at $3,500. A great type coin, worthy of a fabulous set, especially if you demand CAC approval, as none of the MS68s have ever been approved. Cert. Number 25372783 PCGS # 9376
