- 1871-CC Liberty Eagle. Winter 1-A. AU-55 (NGC). 1903 Liberty Eagle. MS-63 (PCGS). Although gold ore output from the nearby Comstock Lode was on the rise in 1871, the Carson City Mint received very little of this precious metal. Rather, most of the bullion was apparently shipped to the San Francisco Mint, a curious situation that would continue to affect even silver ore mining at least into the late 1870s (thus explaining, among other things, the low mintage status of the 1879-CC Morgan dollar). Returning to 1871, the Carson City Mint received only enough gold ore to strike 7,185 eagles. With a mere 120-150 coins extant in all grades (per Rusty Goe, The Mint on Carson Street, 2003), the 1871-CC ranks among the top 10 Carson City Mint tens in terms of both absolute and condition rarity.
With fewer than 10 Uncs known, this Choice AU represents the finest in technical quality that is realistically obtainable for the issue as far as most collectors are concerned. Indeed, we note overall sharp definition to both sides, the strike well executed and the wear light and largely confined to a few isolated highpoints. Alternating between rose-gold and orange-gold colors, the surfaces also reveal considerable "flash" from a semi prooflike finish at more direct angles. Scattered abrasions are commensurate with the grade, and they include a couple of light reeding marks to the obverse portrait.
