- 1854-D Round 50 Cents. BG-423. Rarity-6+. Liberty Head. MS-61 (PCGS).
Warmly patinated in honey-gold, this satiny piece is very smooth for the assigned grade. Striking detail is bold overall with plenty of sharp detail to Liberty's portrait. This M. Deriberpie product shares its reverse with the maker's exceedingly rare BG-422A variety. The obverses of the two varieties are similar, but BG-423 lacks the period-like defect within the letter D. The present example illustrates an intriguing late die state with a cud break joining the lower obverse border to the aforementioned D and an internal cud break in the field before the point of Liberty's bust. A lighter crack meanders into Liberty's neck from the upper left corner of the D, and the cuds are joined by another crack that passes through the tip of the bust. A circular strike through in the lower right obverse field is as made. The reverse die is free of breaks except for a thin crack from the border before the letter H in HALF. A rare variety, represented here by a particularly interesting and desirable Mint State example.
