Lot 314 1798 S-175 R3 Style II Hair, Small 8. PCGS graded AU-58. CAC.Frosty steel and chocolate brown with reddish brown toning in some of the protected areas on both sides. Satiny mint luster shows in the fields, especially on the reverse, and this cent has excellent eye appeal. No spots or stains. The only marks are some light nicks in the field before the portrait, a very shallow planchet flake near the dentils even with the eye, and a pinprick nestled between the bust tip and the dentils. Otherwise this cent is nearly flawless and the reverse looks mint state. In fact the reverse of this cent was used to illustrate the late state of the S-175 reverse in Dr. Sheldon's Early American Cents and Penny Whimsy. LDS, Breen state VI, with die cracks on the reverse and a cud break at the U in UNITED. There is a barely visible planchet clip over TY in LIBERTY that barely affects the dentils (as struck), and that feature can be used to identify this cent. Graded AU55 net EF45 and CC#4 in the Noyes census, his photo #59762.2. Bland says EF45 and tied for CC#4 as well. Our grade is net EF45+. Comes with a century-long provenance that includes some of the brightest luminaries in large cent collecting. The attribution and Nancy and Bryan Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label.
