- This is a pleasing example of this popular Civil War era territorial gold piece. Gold was discovered in the Denver, Colorado area, and just like in the 1830s in Georgia and North Carolina, then California in the 1848-1853 era, enterprising entrepreneurs established assay and coinage operations as a service to the local economy. Clark, Gruber, & Co set up in Denver. While the mintage of the 1861 half eagle is unknown, sufficient numbers are known in circulated grade to suggest that the mintage was sizable, and they were accepted in commercial channels. The design types are very similar to the federal issued half eagles, featuring a coronet adorned head of Liberty, but with PIKES PEAK instead of LIBERTY. The reverse legend reads, CLARK GRUBER & CO DENVER.
While many examples display problems that preclude third party grading, the presently offered example has pleasing, even wear on both sides. The strike is typical for the issue with hints of central softness, but the peripheries show exacting pressure, resulting in full dentils, star centers, and legends. A natural planchet lamination, where an impurity in the metal caused a flaw in the planchet, that flaked off on the reverse. The eye appeal is overall very pleasing.
PCGS 6, NGC 9. The last one sold for $7,200 in July 2022; prior to that, one sold in September 2020 for $9,000. This is a very popular territorial type coin that will see spirited bidding.
