1786 Vermont Copper. RR-9, Bressett 7-F, W-2040. Rarity-4. Baby Head. VF-30 (PCGS).
111.1 grains. Typical rotation 90 degrees clockwise from coin turn. An unusually bold and attractive example of this always crude variety. The surfaces are attractive medium brown with some deep mahogany tones, nearly smooth despite some incredibly minor granularity in areas. As typical, the right side of the obverse is sharper than the left; AUCTORI is merely present while VERMON is bold. The reverse is more evenly struck, aligned to 6 o'clock so that the tops of the date numerals show. Rim a bit crude at 9 o'clock on reverse, 6 o'clock on obverse, as struck. A wedge-shaped planchet flaw behind the obverse bust is the only notable one, an exception on a Baby Head. Sharper and arguably nicer than either Boyd-Ford coin, both ex: Ryder, the second also ex: Parmelee. Select company indeed.
PCGS# 548.
Provenance: From the John "Jack" Royse Collection. Earlier from our (Stack's) sale of the John L. Roper, 2nd Collection, December 1983, lot 321.
