- 1738-D Sou Marque. Lyon Mint. Vlack-70. Rarity-6. EF-45 (PCGS). 28.2 grains. This richly toned piece exhibits intermingled steel-gray to dominant antique copper patina. The detail is a bit soft around the peripheries, sharper in the centers, with all major design elements readily evident. A bit rough overall, but free of sizeable or otherwise significant flaws. This is a rare issue, the first in this series from the Lyon Mint, and Syd Martin notes that this piece is one of only four known. If accurate, the Rarity-6 rating in the 2004 Vlack reference is too liberal. Provenance: From the Sydney F. Martin Collection. Earlier ex Robert A. Vlack; Jeff Rock, September 2006.
