- 1791 Washington Large Eagle Cent. Baker-15, W-10610. Rarity-2. Lettered Edge. MS-65 BN (PCGS). 190.2 grains. UNITED STATES OF AMERICA edge. A satiny and lustrous deep golden-tan specimen with lively mint orange shining through on both sides, especially on the reverse. The strike is bold throughout, with every tiny design detail sharply and elegantly presented. A few faint marks come to light under low magnification, none of them in a primary focal area, and none that assail the unaided eye. Designed by John Gregory Hancock, Sr., and struck at Westwood's in Birmingham, England, this ever-popular British Conder token (Middlesex, D&H-1049) has long struck a chord with American collectors owing to its subject matter. Struck as part of a pattern proposal for contract coinage for the young United States in the years immediately prior to the opening of the Philadelphia Mint, though the proposal went nowhere -- other than into the hands of eager English collectors of the era. Among the finest examples of the type seen to date by PCGS. A truly pleasing Gem that will do justice to any Washingtoniana collection currently being assembled.
