1811 S-287 R2. PCGS graded MS-65 Brown.Beautiful lustrous light bluish steel and olive with frosty mint red covering 10% of the obverse and 20% of the reverse. The only notable marks are a few tiny spots of darker reddish brown oxidation under star 1, a microscopic speck of similar toning under the end of the wreath stem, and another over the O in ONE. These tiny specks are not significant and the eye appeal of this cent is outstanding. MDS, Breen state III late. The fields are covered with fine radial die flowlines and the dentils left of stars 2 & 4 are failing, but there are no rim cuds in those places. Graded MS65 Choice and CC#1 in the Noyes census, his photo #20009. Bland says MS64 and CC#2 behind an example that has been downgraded to net AU55 by Noyes for questionable color (the D. Brent Pogue PCGS MS65RD coin, Stack's Bowers/Sotheby's 3/2017:5135 that brought $493,500). This is the Noyes plate coin for the variety in his 1991 reference on the early date large cents. Our grade is MS64+, close to MS65. A superb example worthy of the finest collection. (Note: This cent was in a PCGS holder graded MS65RB when submitted for reholdering to add the Sheldon variety attribution and Doug Bird provenance to the label, so we suspect is it on the borderline for the RB designation.) The attribution and Doug Bird Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; none finer.(PCGS # 36496) Value $100,000 - UP
