- FRANCE. Silver Satirical 5 Francs Essai (Pattern), 1872. Wuerden (Brussels) Mint. Government of National Defense. PCGS SPECIMEN-63 Gold Shield. Maz-2338; Gad-747; Histoire des Monnaies Satiriques p. 491-492. Obverse: Bust of Adolphe Thiers left within border of torches and vintage extinguishers; Reverse: Shield bearing SATORY and conveying firing squad scene; all within oak and laurel wreath. Featuring a handsome cabinet tone, this brilliant specimen exhibits some peripheral iridescence with its otherwise steel gray surfaces. A rather SCARCE and interesting satirical issue. Following the disastrous Franco-Prussian War and the capture of Emperor Napoleon III, a republic was proclaimed in France, with Adolphe Thiers serving as the its first president, and second one to be elected.
