Possessing a totally original, classic, old time collection look is the borderline GEM quality 1874 Proof Trade dollar. Watery, reflective mirrors have a great flash and lovely depth of clarity despite a dusting of iridescent tone. Sharply struck, thickly frosted devices contrast boldly against the hard, sleek fields. Perhaps a stray line or two can be found with the aid of a strong glass that keeps this coin from a full GEM grade, but they do not limit the eye appeal, which at certain angles this beauty takes on the look of a near DCAM. Only 700 Proofs were struck. PCGS 31, NGC 17, CAC 15. Do NOT let the population data fool you, NO PCGS/CAC example has sold in auction since August 2013! The current PCGS Price Guide value is listed at $5,500 and keep in mind that there are only SEVEN graded higher in the CAM designation, and in PR65 CAM this date sells for well into the five figure range.
