- A fantastic early Proof rarity. While the original mintage was not recorded, Water Breen (1988) wrote, "In triumph, Mint Director Robert Maskell Patterson on June 30, 1837, ordered the newly completed Gobrecht dies to be placed into the dime press, and some 30 brilliant Proofs struck for presentation to Treasury officials and other VIPs. About 20 of these Proofs survive today..." The experts at PCGS CoinFacts estimates 25-30 are known today in all grades. The presently offered CHOICE BRILLIANT PROOF example is a fantastic representative of this first year of the design. Housed in an ancient PCGS "rattler" holder and endorsed by CAC, this coin boasts a totally original melange of olive and pewter, with accents of russet, rose, and tan patina. As you rotate the surfaces in a light, a dusting of champagne toning pops and adds to the wonderful blend of colors. The No Stars design is quite pleasing, the wide open obverse fields give the central devices a bold cameo like appearance, and the details are razor sharp in definition. This outstanding example has distinct claims to an even higher grade, and while we make no guarantees, we would not be surprised if one day this coin would end up in a higher grade holder. Ex. Mid-American's January 1988 Auction, lot 414; E. Horatio Morgan Collection; Stack's Bowers' March 2020 sale of the E. Horatio Morgan Collection, lot 3133. Only 30 are estimated to have been struck. PCGS 9, NGC 6, CAC 2. This coin last came to market when the world was shutting down due to the Covid-19 pandemic, realizing $9,600 in March 2020, an uncertain time. Today, the PCGS Price Guide value is listed at $12,500 and the CAC CPG value is $12,100. We think that is where this high end example will end up. We have not handled an example of this date in over four years. Good luck. Cert. Number 2052988 PCGS # 4718
