- THE B.S.T. COLLECTION Ex The Virginian Collection, as noted on the holder. The 1837 half eagle is very scarce overall, the mintage of 207,121 was produced using 3 different die marriages, and the HM-2 is the most available, with Daryl Haynor estimating 200 survive of this variety (which accounts for about half of all known examples from this date). This borderline GEM ranks among the FINEST KNOWN. Boasting an outstanding, brilliant mint luster, this frosty example displays a rich medium gold coloration. As you rotate the surfaces in a light, faint orange and olive-gold accents come to the fore. The strike is bold, with essentially fully rendered devices that have a rich frosty texture. Every detail is crisply defined, resulting of an exacting die blow and has razor sharp definition throughout. There are a few microscopic marks, to call these anything more than superficial would be an exaggeration; none are visible to the naked eye and have zero bearing on the outstanding eye appeal. Ex Heritage, February 2005, lot 7799; American Numismatic Rarities' C.L. Lee Sale, September 2005, lot 1247; Heritage's sale of the Charleston Collection, June 2008, lot 1979; Daryl J. Haynor Virginian Collection, Stack's Bowers, August 2022, lot 5051; our consignor. PCGS 10, NGC 5, CAC 6. There are two in MS64+ and just five finer across all three die marriages. This coin sold for $66,000 in its most recent appearance in August 2022. Any certified GEM will cost well into the six figures, making this near-GEM with CAC approval and a PCGS Price Guide value of $75,000 a great value for anyone working on a top tier set. Good luck, great gold coins are still in very strong demand, and no doubt the bidding will be intense! Cert. Number 37203055 PCGS # 765244
