- 1827 Capped Bust Dime. JR-5. Rarity-3. Pointed Top 1 in 10 C. MS-65 (NGC).
Brilliant untoned silver with abundant luster on both sides. Frosty and appealing, somewhat reflective in the fields, no marks or significant flaws. Well struck, even at central reverse, several of the obverse stars show minor striking softness. An elusive variety in higher grades, the JR book notes that the variety is "difficult to find above VF-30" and notes the R.L. Miles coin, graded MS-60 in the book, as finest known. Unfortunately, the JR book lists that coin as Lot 130 in the Miles sale (Lot 130 is an 1809 large cent) and the single 1827 dime in the April, 1969 Miles sale has neither a photograph nor a die variety description, which makes us question the veracity of the information presented in the book on this variety. None this fine are reported in the JRCS census, and we suspect this coin ranks within the Condition Census for the variety. The Logan coin was an EF. An important opportunity for Capped Bust dime collectors, or an advantageous opportunity to purchase a high-grade type coin that offers something extra. Only nine examples (including all die pairings) have been graded finer by NGC.
Provenance: From the Huber Collection.
NGC Census: 21; 9 are finer (MS67 finest).
PCGS# 4504. NGC ID: 2375.
