- 1925 Stone Mountain Memorial. Counterstamped 40 TEXAS/VA. MS-63 (PCGS).
As confirmed by Charles B. Rogers in his comprehensive two volume reference Unlocking the Mystery of the Counterstamped Stone Mountain Confederate Memorial Half Dollar(2019), authentic non-abbreviated Texas counterstamps in this series are known only over FLA. (Florida) or VA. (Virginia) stamps. This is one of the latter coins, although it was not included in the (now quite dated) census of known examples published by Adna G. Wilde in the article "Counterstamped Stone Mountain Half Dollars: Where Are They Today?," The Numismatist, August 1987. The TEXAS counterstamp is in the expected location, above the word LIBERTY on the reverse, with the V in VA plainly visible beneath the X. The A from VA serves double duty as the A in TEXAS, the period from the VA. stamp no longer discernible. The number 40 is neatly counterstamped in the upper left reverse field. Several toning spots are noted for this side of the coin, which is otherwise lightly patinated in iridescent champagne-pink. The somewhat lighter silver-tinged obverse of the host coin shows olive-russet outlines to many of the design elements. Attractive Choice Mint State quality overall with full mint luster and no marks of note.
Rogers identifies TEXAS/VA. counterstamps such as this as "Unit or Town/City 'Auction Coins'," which were sold at higher levels to raise additional funds for the Stone Mountain Memorial.
Provenance: Ex Pat Johnson Collection.
