- 1901 Liberty Half Eagle. Proof-63 (PCGS). A scarce issue that, nonetheless, enjoys tremendous appeal among proof gold type collectors, the 1901 half eagle was produced to the extent of 140 coins in specimen format. Less than half of those pieces can be traced today, with Jeff Garrett and Ron Guth (<em>Encyclopedia of U.S. Gold Coins: 1795-1933</em>, 2008 edition) providing an estimate of just 50-60 coins extant. Although not denoted as such on the PCGS insert, this delightful Choice survivor has some claim to a Cameo designation. The fields are highly reflective, but the devices present more of a satiny texture that provides the greatest contrast as the surfaces turn away from a direct light source. Even medium-gold color throughout, and also fully struck throughout, a few minor obverse handling marks are all that seem to preclude a higher numeric grade.
