Struck in 1937 to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the famous Civil War battle, this commemorative half dollar was designed by William Marks Simpson. Union General George B. McClellan and Confederate General Robert E. Lee grace the obverse of this coin that celebrates what may very well be the bloodiest day in American Military history, either at home or abroad; more than 23,000 men were killed, wounded, or declared missing after this one day battle on September 17, 1862.
