- An underrated quarter eagle issue from the Charlotte mint, and especially rare in nice grade with good overall eye appeal; most are poorly made. Very well struck only light weakness on some of Ms. Liberty’s curls and eagle’s feathers. Roughness on the portrait and the streak on the reverse are all mint made characteristics for this date, which do not affect the technical grade, as they are AS MADE. Subtle mint frost can be seen when viewed in a light. For the date and grade the eye appeal is superb. PCGS 12, NGC 16, CAC 2. Don’t let the population figures fool you, NOT A SINGLE PCGS AU55 has ever sold in auction! None of the NGC coins that did sell have CAC approval either. The most recent PCGS graded coins in the AU range were a 53 that sold in 2008 for $3,450 and a 58 that sold in April 2013 for $6,463 (neither were CAC). The current PCGS value is listed at $6,500. This really pretty 55 should see strong bidding from advanced southern mint collectors when it crosses the block; as you can see, these do not appear with any kind of frequency. PCGS # 7778 Cert.
