An IMPORTANT first year issue and highly sought after by collectors for this reason. Blankets of mint frost are present over choice surfaces which are enhanced by lovely, azure blue, magenta, gold and rose toning intermingle over steel gray fields. A couple of tiny breaks in luster are noted with strong magnification. A tiny toning spot serves as a diagnostic for this piece in the left field adjacent to Liberty's shoulder. Really pristine and choice for the assigned grade. Well defined devices with strong lines in the shield, bold hair strands and rich plumage on the eagle.
Designed by Christian Gobrecht, the obverse motif is like his early dollar designs of 1836-1839, but the design is not quite as refined and the eagle on the reverse has been changed from a flying eagle format to the style with a perched eagle.
Although a relatively obtainable issue in circulated condition (as it was the workhorse of domestic commerce with very few being saved, as coin collecting was in it's infancy at the time), it becomes exceedingly difficult to obtain in higher AU and Mint State grades. In this cataloguer's opinion, Seated Dollars are one of the hardest series to assemble in any grade with coins that are not net-graded forone reason or another. It is truly a labor of love that usually takes years to complete.
PCGS 18 (just 2 grading MS62+), NGC 28, CAC 2. This same coin traded hands back in September 2018 at a Kagin’s sale for $9,600. Just 61,005 pieces were struck. With so few pieces available for sale and the demand by collectors for high end pieces, we strongly encourage you to bid liberally if you wish to add this lovely coin to your collection.
