- 1861-S Liberty Head Quarter Eagle. AU-58 (NGC). Pleasing medium-gold coloration defines this desirable Civil War example, accented by the faintest pinkish tones. The fields are blanketed by considerable satiny luster and remain free from noteworthy abrasions. Just lightly worn across the highpoints and boldly defined throughout. Only 24,000 examples of the date were struck and survivors are seldom encountered above low-AU condition. Gold specialist David Akers admitted that he had "never seen a full mint state" example when writing in 1988. Just about 85 example are though to remain across all grades. The present Choice AU piece is certainly an important representative of the extant population, and just 7 pieces have been certified finer by NGC. NGC Census: 20; 7 finer through MS-62. PCGS# 7795.
