- 1873 Trade Dollar. MS-65 (NGC). Exportation was the watchword for the business strike 1873 trade dollar at the time this issue was produced. The first Philadelphia Mint contribution to this series -- which, after all, was initially conceived for export to the Orient -- virtually the entire mintage of 396,635 circulation strikes were quickly shipped overseas to serve in export trade. Unlike with many later date trade dollar issues, few examples of the 1873 were retained stateside, and even fewer returned to the United States after circulating in the Orient.<br /> The foregoing discussion outlines the factors underlying the relative rarity of the 1873 trade dollar in all Mint State grades. The conditionally rare status of the present Gem is further attributed to a lack of contemporary numismatic interest in these coins, which fact suggests that most Uncs for this issue survived as a matter of chance rather than as part of well cared for collections. An uncommonly smooth, generally distraction free example, both sides of this lovely piece allow ready appreciation of billowy mint frost and pinpoint striking detail. Blushes of vivid cobalt-blue, champagne-apricot and salmon-pink peripheral toning also grace the surfaces and enhance already strong eye appeal.
