- A GEM example of this popular Civil War era pattern rarity. The J-381 is a die trial from regular Proof dies, struck in copper with a reeded edge. This Rarity-7- (7-12 struck) issue was likely part of an off-metal Proof set. The vast majority of the surfaces are a highly reflective RED color. Indeed, the B in the RB designation is just a hint of mellowing and remnants of an ancient fingerprint and a few toning flecks. The eye appeal is exceptional and very pleasing. Ex Heritage, August 2004, lot 14388; Heritage, March 2009, lot 2468; Heritage, July 2009, lot 26361. PCGS 3, NGC 1. The most recent example to sell was the Simpson coin, realizing $3,360. While CAC approved, that coin was a lot less RED than this one. The current PCGS Price Guide value is listed at $4,000. Good luck. Cert. Number 21517305 PCGS # 70552
