- 1854-S Liberty Head Eagle. AU-58 (NGC).
An impressive near-Mint example with bright golden-wheat color throughout. It is sharply defined across all elements with nearly full, softly frosted to semi-reflective luster. 1854 represents the first year of eagle production at the San Francisco Mint, where a sizable quantity of 123,826 coins was struck. As a result, the 1854-S remains relatively available overall in today's market. However, Uncirculated example are incredibly rare, as the vast majority of this mintage was subject to extensive circulation through the American West. A more realistic goal for many collectors, therefore would be to focus on the Choice AU grade level. Such pieces are scarce in their own right, however, and this is the first recovered from the wreck of the S.S. Republicthat we can recall handling in quite some time. This lot includes the original box for the coin, informational CD on the S.S. Republicand Certificate of Authenticity, as issued by Odyssey Marine Exploration. The supporting items are available to the winning bidder upon request to Stack's Bowers Galleries at the close of the auction.
