GERMANY. Hesse-Darmstadt. 2 Mark, 1904. NGC AU-58. KM-372. The landgraviate of Hesse-Darmstadt was created when Hesse was divided in 1567 and maintained a rivalry with Hesse-Kassel until the latter state was annexed by Prussia in 1867. This issue, along with a similar five mark, was issued on the four hundredth birthday of landgrave Philip the Magnanimous. Brilliant with nearly full mint luster. Estimate: $70 - $100. NGC AU-58.
