1787 Machin's Mills Halfpenny. Vlack 21-II-87D-II, W-7970. Rarity-4. GEORGIVS III. AU-50 (PCGS).
111.1 grains. Perfectly choice light brown, an extraordinary example of this variety. Aside from some harmless verdigris in protected areas that bespeaks originality, this glossy Machin's halfpenny is completely problem-free, unusual for the issue as a whole and this variety in particular. A few shallow planchet flecks left of reverse center manifest more as color than depth. Struck from the early state of this variety (21-I-87D-I is the die lapped late state) but with heavy clashing still visible atop reverse. The Kessler-Spangenberger coin was called Condition Census but doesn't hold a candle to this one. The catalog (NASCA 4-81) noted "one Unc. Known and two or three EFs." We know where the Unc is, and we believe this is one of the "EFs" mentioned, though your cataloger grades it AU. A very special example of this variety, finer than the Ringo and Schettino coins.
PCGS# 469.
Provenance: From the John "Jack" Royse Collection.
