- Choice surfaces, color, and eye appeal for the assigned grade level. Rich golden color is given a back light from much retained luster. Clearly unmolested and original surfaces show only the slightest wear in the fields. Discovered in 1960, the 1853/2 $10 has, up until the creation of 3rd party grading, been considered a great rarity: David Akers wrote in 1980 that “it would be appear to be very rare,” and Walter Breen claimed, “possibly 8-10 known” in 1988. Today, the combined PCGS and NGC data reflect close to 200 grading events, likely including some duplication. PCGS 12, NGC 35, CAC 4. There has not been a single example in 53 to sell in a major auction since August 2010, which sold for $2,645 and one sold for $2,550 in a November 2014 internet only auction. The current PCGS Price Guide value is $3,500. A scarce and cool overdate, this early Lib $10 will be a nice addition to an advanced set of $10 Libs.
