- GREAT BRITAIN. Penny, ND (ca. 1163-67). Thetford Mint; Turstain, moneyer. Henry II. PCGS EF-45.
S-1339; N-957. Obverse: Crowned facing bust, holding scepter; Reverse: Cross pattee, with crosslet in angles. A very crude issue struck during the reign of Henry II and named after a town where a hoard was discovered, this example is the finest certified by PCGS and bears very little signs of wearing and a portrait that far surpasses the standard example. Struck about as good as they come, and neatly centered on a somewhat misshapen planchet.
Henry II, having secured his place upon the throne by agreement with Stephen, quickly gobbled up land in a series of conquests that gave him an empire. While initially militarily successful, Henry was soon undermined by attempt to reform the relationship between the Church and the monarchy. His contentious relationship with his former friend Thomas Beckett the Archbishop of Canterbury led to Beckett’s murder in 1170. Henry’s image never recovered and three of his sons led open revolt against him and he narrowly retained his position. His loyal son Richard succeeded him to the throne when he died in 1189.
Estimate: $100 - $200.
Provenance: From the Runze Collection.
