- Legend Rare Coin Auctions is proud to offer this extreme example of a 1950 Proof Franklin. Experts agree this coin has some of the deepest mirrors possible! Anyone who collects Proof Franklin half dollars knows how hard these early dates are to find in Cameo and especially Deep Cameo. The dies were given a polish at the beginning of production, and they continued to be used until all the reflective finish on the fields and frosty texture on the devices was worn away. Only the earliest of strikes retained any kind of contrast. Compounding on the quality of striking that limits grade and designation is the original mint packaging which often imparted hairlines or hazy toning. The present DCAM GEM has the most amazing mirrors in the fields. They are truly superb in their flashiness and brilliance, with the utmost in depth, clarity, and cleanliness. There is a blush of peripheral toning framing the obverse, but it really is invisible to the naked eye, blending into the blackness of the mirrors. The thickly frosted devices stand out in the boldest contrast you will likely see on any 1950 Proof half dollar. The surfaces are essentially flawless, with an icy, glassy smoothness that cannot be beat. PCGS 4, NGC 12, CAC 2. The other PCGS/CAC example realized a record $44,650 when it sold in the August 2017 ANA auction. The current PCGS Price Guide value is $42,500. Just a single PR66 DCAM is graded finer, a coin that has never sold in auction. This is a truly stunning example that belongs in the most amazing of Registry Sets of Proof Franklins. Good luck. Cert.
