- 1878-S Trade Dollar. MS-64+ (NGC). CAC. This handsome piece is richly toned over smooth, satiny, sharply defined surfaces. Rose and lavender-gray toning is accented with olive color at certain border areas. Although the order from Secretary of the Treasury John Sherman halting circulation strike trade dollar production was issued on February 22, 1878, the San Francisco Mint continued striking coins until early April, by which time 4,162,000 pieces had been delivered. This is the fourth highest mintage in the trade dollar series and was achieved to make good on existing orders for these coins. One of the most frequently encountered trade dollars in numismatic circles, the 1878-S is a perennial favorite for type purposes in both circulated and Mint State grades. PCGS# 7048. NGC ID: 253G.
