- Exquisite Gem Proof 1860 Silver Dollar
1860 Liberty Seated Silver Dollar. Proof-66 (PCGS). CAC.
Offered is a rare premium Gem survivor of an early Proof Liberty Seated dollar. Exceptionally attractive cabinet toning takes the form of mottled olive-russet and silver-gray on the obverse, steel-blue peripheral color around a sandy-gray center on the reverse. A dizzying array of vivid undertones flash into view under a light. Highly reflective in finish with a sharp strike, this lovely specimen really needs to be seen to be fully appreciated.
The 1860 is one of the more frequently encountered Proof No Motto Seated dollars, although survivors are much rarer than the stated mintage of 1,330 pieces might imply. It is most likely that only a few hundred examples were actually released to contemporary collectors, with the balance of the mintage ultimately destroyed at the Mint or, more probably, disposed of through release into commercial channels. Specialists Osburn and Cushing suspect that just 525 specimens remain, all from the OC-P1 die pair. Examples grading finer than Proof-64 are seldom encountered, underscoring the significance of this offering for quality-conscious collectors.
Provenance: From the Collection of James Allaire Millholland, 1842-1911.
PCGS Population: 10; 2 finer in this category (Proof-67 finest).
CAC Population: 4; 2.
