1867 Three-Dollar Gold Piece. MS-61 (NGC). 1845-D Liberty Half Eagle. Winter 12-I. Genuine--Code 92, Cleaning (PCGS). Softly frosted, honey-rose surfaces present as uncommonly smooth in the context of the BU grade level. We see only small, wispy abrasions, in fact, and none are worthy of singular concern. Overall sharply struck, and uncommonly well preserved for a survivor of this challenging 2,600 piece business strike delivery.<br /> &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;The 1867 is much rarer than many low mintage three-dollar gold issues from the late 1870s and 1880s. The vast majority of examples have long since been lost to commercial use, and Q. David Bowers and Doug Winter (<em>The United States $3 Gold Pieces: 1854-1889</em>, 2005), estimate that only 20-25 Mint State coins are extant.
