- 1783 John Chalmers Shilling. W-1790. Rarity-4. Birds, Long Worm. Fine-12 (PCGS).
Warmly patinated in olive and charcoal-gray, this impressive piece also offers uncommonly smooth surfaces for the assigned grade. There are no blemishes of note, in fact, and the bird side retains bold detail to most major features and allows full appreciation of the design. The digits 83 are a tad faint, but the date is fully legible. Wear is more extensive and less even on the other side of the coin, where we note softness toward the left and right borders. The I and S in I. CHALMERS are faint, as is much of the wreath, but the clasped hands are discernible and other peripheral letters are clear. Although this is the most frequently encountered denomination in the challenging Chalmers coinage series, the Long Worm shilling is still scarce to rare in all grades when viewed in the wider context of U.S. numismatics. The present example would render good service in a circulated type set.
