- 1720-A French Colonies Demi-Sol, or 6 Deniers. Paris Mint. Breen-298. MS-64 RB (PCGS). This is the plate coin for the type on page 49 of the 1988 book Walter Breen's Complete Encyclopedia of U.S. and Colonial Coins, identifiable as such by a trace of light gray-brown tinting in the obverse field at the chin. A few other minor toning spots are scattered about, but mostly we see a nice blend of pale-brown patina and original pinkish-rose color. The overall strike is sharp, and the eye appeal is remarkable in an example of this scarce John Law copper type. Breen describes the 1720-A issue as "rare," although it seems to be more plentiful than other issues of the type such as 1720-AA, 1720-BB and 1720-S. In all, approximately 1.6 million examples of this type were shipped to Canada for use in the French colonies there.
