- Among $3 gold pieces, this one is an underrated rarity. Per David Akers’ groundbreaking research, he ranks this date as 7th rarest by auction appearance and 5th in terms of average grade. The mintage was originally 7,000 pieces, but supposedly 2,592 were melted down. At the time Akers’ research was published he had not seen or heard of a coin in MS, and only a small handful in AU, the best being “AU55.” Bright and brilliant/semi-reflective golden surfaces catch your eye. As you rotate the coin in the light and view it under a strong glass, you can see a few insignificant lines from an ancient wiping. The strike is bold and the details are strong. Only the lightest bit of friction can be seen on the high points. PCGS 10, NGC 17. The advent of third party grading has changed some of what we know about rarity among certain issues. While Akers said that he had seen nothing better than AU55, PCGS has graded a few coins finer, the best being an MS62 in the Bob Simpson Collection, and a 61 that was recently sold in the Pogue Collection. In AU55, the most recent PCGS coin sold for $7,050 in March 2016, and an NGC 55 sold for $8,813 the month prior. Keep in mind that in 58 the APRs jump into the $15,000-$20,000 range. The current PCGS value in AU55 is $10,000. An impressively rare coin that will find a great home in any set of $3 gold. PCGS # 7981 Cert. Number 82251166 PCGS # 7981
