- THE B.S.T. COLLECTION Ex Reynolds Collection, as noted on the insert. Any GEM early date large cent, especially those in the 1790s are incredibly RARE, highly desirable, and something very special. From the historic standpoint, these were the everyman coins, used in circulation when a cent had some value. Add to that, the more than sixty years these were in circulation before the advent of the small cent in 1856, and the crude production methods of the era, it is amazing to imagine that any copper coin from this early era could survive in such a high grade. Among the FINEST examples of the Lettered Edge 1795 cent subtype regardless of Sheldon die marriage; tied for highest graded in the BN designation at PCGS. This S-65 is tied for CC#5 in the Del Bland Census, and tied for CC#7 in the Noyes Census. The present coin is virtually flawless, even under intense scrutiny, you are hard pressed to find a single flaw of any kind worthy of mention. The surfaces are highly lustrous, with a beautiful medium brown and hints of original red color surviving in the protected recesses. Sharply struck from a middle die state, Breen's State IV, with a pair of thin die cracks near the date; die clash marks on the reverse. Some minor roughness in the central reverse was likely caused by debris that was clinging to the dies when this example was struck, but has little impact on the striking definition and on the outstanding visual allure of this GEM 1795 large cent. The S-75 is a Rarity-3 overall, but that does not represent the rarity in such a high grade. Ex R.W. Randall, New Netherlands, March 1973, lot 42; R. Tettenhorst, October 1995 private treaty to Jay Parrino; private treaty from Jay Parrino to Thomas D. Reynolds, June 1997; Goldberg's sale of the Thomas D. Reynolds Collection, January 2016, lot 53; our consignor via Legend Numismatics. PCGS 8, NGC 1, CAC 4. This is the SOLE S-75 in MS65 BN at PCGS. More than seven years ago, this coin realized $56,400. Prior to that, two other S-75s in MS65 BN with CAC approval sold realizing around $80,000 each (in 2011 and 2013). The current PCGS Price Guide value is $87,500 and the CAC CPG value is $92,600. There are NONE FINER at either service in the BN category, making this beautiful GEM 1795 cent perfect for a superb 18th century type set or more advanced collection of early copper. Good luck. Cert.
