- 1841 Braided Hair Cent. N-1. Rarity-5. Proof-64 RB (PCGS). CAC. OGH. Highly reflective surfaces exhibit a pleasing blend of lilac, electric blue and mint-orange, the latter chiefly in the recessed areas. Perhaps the most readily available date for a proof large cent dated prior to the 1850s, though in the ultimate sense it is, indeed, a rarity. Careful examination reveals a planchet flaw in the field near star 1, as struck, and not obtrusive. Choice overall with excellent eye appeal.

Numismatic Reflections by Q. David Bowers

Here, indeed, is a splendid early cent. Why the 1841 is more available than other years of the era remains a question. I cannot help but wonder if the inauguration of William Henry Harrison on March 4, 1841 might have been the occasion—but this strictly speculation, something I do not like to do. Perhaps, better stated, it is food for thought. The present coin is ideal for a type set featuring the earlier style of the Braided Hair motif.
