- 1876-S Liberty Eagle. AU-50 (PCGS). With a tiny mintage of 5,000 pieces and the usual high attrition rates, any 1876-S eagle is a rare coin today—in the present grade this piece is indeed one of the finest known to survive. While most denominations struck in this important Centennial year of America's Independence are known in quantity, the $10 eagle denomination is quite rare. Notice the fact that the 1876 Philadelphia eagle boasts a mintage of 687 pieces, the Carson City model just 4,696 examples, and all are rarities today. This splendid San Francisco coin boasts traces of mint luster, a bold strike and average or so surfaces. Yes, there are some moderate handling marks and shallow scratches, not unexpected for the grade level. Liberty's cheek and neck are clean though, the color is attractive with orange-gold throughout with a dash of light copper surrounding certain devices. Despite 9 being reported this high by PCGS, importantly there are just 4 pieces graded higher—all at the AU-53 level above. Highly collectible as a condition rarity, and the estimate of 80-100 known in all grades by PCGS seems to hold true for this date and mint.
