- 1870 Pattern Half Dollar. Judd-948, Pollock-1076. Rarity-7+. Proof-64 RD (PCGS). 1870 Pattern Half Dollar. Judd-943, Pollock-1071. Rarity-8. Proof-64 Cameo (PCGS). Standard Silver design with a bust of Liberty facing right on the obverse, the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA at the border and the motto IN GOD WE TRUST on a scroll below. Liberty is wearing a soft cap ornamented with two stars, and a scroll inscribed LIBERTY crosses her shoulder. The word LIBERTY is expressed in raised letters, there is no initial B within the folds of the ribbon at the back of Liberty's cap and the point of the bust is distant from the scroll. The reverse exhibits a wreath of cereals around the denomination 50 CENTS and the date 1870; the word STANDARD is inscribed along the upper border. Struck in copper with a plain edge.<br /> The excellent website uspatterns.com allows for only about a half dozen survivors of the Judd-948 pattern half dollar type, and the present example is far and away the finest known. It is the only full Red specimens listed at PCGS and NGC, and is easily finer than, among other pieces, the coin that appeared in Bowers and Merena's March 1985 Russell B. Patterson Collection sale, lot 373. Aglow with fully intact reddish-orange color, both sides also reveal scintillating mint reflectivity that is most pronounced in the fields. A few well scattered carbon spots hardly detract and, in fact, they do little more than preclude an even higher numeric grade. Gorgeous!
