Among the highest graded 1863 Proof half dollars! Bold shimmering, watery mirrors shine through a luster of totally original golden, amber, violet, and olive hues. In the light, the colors "float" on the mirrors the way oil floats in a puddle. Even with the aid of a strong glass, only the most minute, microscopic lines can be seen. The strike is boldly defined with crisply impressed details fully rendered and razor sharp. The eye appeal is captivating! Only 460 proofs were struck during this turning point year in the Civil War. PCGS 3, NGC 3. The last one to sell realized $7,638 in October 2015 and the PCGS Price Guide value is $8,750. None are graded numerically finer, although PCGS has graded 2 in PR66 CAM. A similarly toned example brought $11,750 in November 2012 and darkly toned NGC PR67 sold for $14,100 in January 2013, and we think that might be more in line value-wise for this SUPERB coin. Cert.
