- 1970 United States Assay Commission Medal. Bronze. 57 mm. By Frank Gasparro. JK AC-114a. Rarity-7. MS-66 (NGC).
The standard sandy-gold patina is warm and even; the reverse has subtle rose and blue-gray accents to the high points. Otherwise smooth and attractive, a small carbon spot in the right obverse field is mentioned solely for accuracy.
A forward-facing portrait of Treasury Secretary David M. Kennedy is shown on the obverse of JK AC-114, while the reverse features the Treasury Department seal. The 1970 is one of the most elusive issues in the later Assay Commission medal series, offered here in exceptional Gem preservation. Members of the 1970 Assay Commission included gold connoisseur Harry W. Bass, Jr. and numismatic columnist Leon Lindheim.
This lot includes the original case and box, the former As New and the latter Extremely Fine with a prominent scuff on the lid and other minor signs of handling scattered about. (Total: 1 medal; 2 supporting items)
Provenance: From the Richard Jewell Collection.
