- 1859-S Liberty Head Eagle. EF-45 (PCGS).
An desirable example of this underrated absolute and condition rarity in the challenging Liberty Head eagle series. Warm reddish-honey patina blankets both sides, the surfaces of which reveal faint remnants of original satin luster when viewed with the aid of a direct light source. Detail is commensurate for an 1850s eagle at the assigned grade level, the central design elements retaining the boldest definition. Wispy hairlines are noted for accuracy, but we see none of the sizeable or otherwise singularly mentionable abrasions often associated with circulated San Francisco Mint gold coinage from the mid 19th century. The 1859-S was produced to the extent of just 7,000 pieces, the vast majority of which were worn out and eventually lost through rigorous commercial use. Among the survivors, of which PCGS CoinFactsallows for just 40 to 60 coins, the typically encountered grades are VF and EF. Apart from a single entry in MS-60 on the NGC Census, this issue is unknown in Mint State. The offering of any 1859-S eagle is obviously a significant opportunity for the advanced collector of San Francisco Mint and/or Liberty Head gold coinage, the present example sure to see spirited bidding commensurate with its desirability.
