NETHERLANDS EAST INDIES. Kingdom of the Netherlands. Bronzed Copper Medal, 1878. PCGS SPECIMEN-64. Zw-441. Diameter: 60.5 mm. Struck to mark the centennial of the Batavian Society of Arts and Sciences. Dies by Ch. Wiener of Brussels. Obverse: palm tree with shield on truck, volcanoes behind; reverse: motto in floral wreath. This group proclaimed itself the oldest scientific society in Asia. Batavia is the Dutch name for Jakarta. This medal is cited in W. J. F. Zwierzina, Beschrijving Nederlandsche Penningen, 1864-1898, Amsterdam, 1902 (reprinted 1994). Estimate: $60 - $100.
