- 1854 Pattern Flying Eagle Cent. Judd-164 Original, Pollock-189. Rarity-5. Bronze. Plain Edge. Proof-63 BN (PCGS).
Obv:An eagle in full flight to the left, surrounded by 13 stars with the date 1855 below. Rev: Similar to that of the contemporary regular issue large cent, but on a smaller planchet with reduced size of the lettering and wreath. Struck in bronze with a plain edge. Judd-164 was an early part of the Mint effort to replace the cumbersome large cent, culminating in the 1857 Flying Eagle cent. Labeled Brown by NGC, the dominant color on each side, however, is deep purple and reddish-tan. The reflective fields greatly enhance the patina.
Provenance: From the Collection of Dr. Frances W. Constable.
PCGS# 11678.
