- Mint State 1848 Silver Dollar Rarity 1848 Liberty Seated Silver Dollar. OC-1. Rarity-2. MS-62 (PCGS). CAC. An incredibly lustrous, richly original example of this key date issue that displays dynamic olive-russet and steel-blue iridescence scattered over the obverse. There is a base of soft antique silver tinting to both sides, and the reverse displays similar colors, more prominently confined to the periphery. The toning is backlit by intense satin to semi-reflective luster. Well struck for an issue that is essentially unknown with full definition, this is a beautiful coin that is especially delightful. The production run of just 15,000 pieces makes the 1848 the lowest mintage Liberty Seated dollar from the 1840s. Once again, the limited supply of domestically mined silver combined with the widespread commercial use of Spanish-American coinage are the prime culprits for the Philadelphia Mint's paltry issue of dollars. With so few coins struck, the 1848 is scarce in circulated grades, and its low mintage, key date status results in strong demand from specialists. Mint State survivors are highly elusive and, when offered at all, are apt to be less than choice at the assigned grade level. This piece is among the finest seen by CAC.
