- Newman 4-G (R.3), no period, seven harp strings. Ex-PCGS 245.64/4176460 at the same grade. When a 1773 Virginia is found with full mint red color, odds are that it sources back to a small, legendary keg of mint-state examples acquired by Colonel Mendes Cohen -- at least, according to Walter Breen. Despite the rumored hoard, the fact is that there is no definitive proof as to when or how the hoard was obtained, except that Cohen was known to sell off specimens on occasion and left a stash of 2200 examples to his heirs, subsequently depleted after 1929.
This remarkable example features warm, fire-orange coloration throughout except for traces of grey on the highpoints. Aged and previously rusted dies were able to bring up considerable detail, albeit with some distension of the peripheral devices due to extended die usage. PCGS shows this coin as being tied for the second finest in existence, unless the tied grading incident is for the prior serial number.
