FROM THE BOYLSTON COLLECTION PART III Rare Near Unc 1856-S Half Dollar Mostly white with pale golden toning towards the peripheries. Scattered light contact and minimal rub are consistent with the assigned grade. 211,000 pieces were struck for circulation in just the second year in which the San Francisco Mint issued half dollars. A minute number survived in mint state as the vast majority circulated in the old West. PCGS 5, NGC 8. A mere 9 coins have been graded mint state. Listed in the PCGS price guide with a value of $5,000, and last sold at auction for $2,280 in January 2019. Only 4 auction records for 1856-S in this grade in the last 10 years.
