- FROM THE M & S PETTY COLLECTION Ex Stack, Rudolf, Legend Collections, as noted on the insert. We are proud to offer this illustrious example of the RAREST Carson City silver dollar of ANY type! Only 2,300 were struck, perhaps 200 survive in all grades, many of them low grade or damaged in some way by cleaning or other mishandling, accidental or intentional. Whether the rarity was caused by attrition due to wide spread circulation or as R.W. Julian and Q. David Bowers postulate, perhaps a small number was released into circulation, and the remainder was melted and recoined into Trade dollars later on in the year. What cannot be disputed is the absolute rarity! This is a Choice AU example and very attractive for the date and grade. In May 2003, Stack's offered this coin as part of the renowned L.K. Rudolf Collection, where it was described in part: "Choice About Uncirculated, with some claims to an even higher grade. Wonderfully original lavender-gray centers are framed by rings of bright red, fiery gold, and pale blue peripheral iridescence. Well balanced, evenly struck, and still retaining quite a bit of underlying mint lustre. A lovely example of the rarest of all Carson City Mint Silver Dollar dates of all three types!" Nearly 20 years later we cannot add much to that description, though we note that the quality is very high end, as proven by the green CAC seal of approval. We have marveled at this coin from the moment that it came into the office! Ex. James A. Stack Collection, Stack's, March 1995, lot 219; L.K. Rudolf Collection, Stack's, May 2003, lot 2142; Legend's Second Set; Tom Bender Collection; private sale to our consignor. PCGS 8, NGC 2, CAC 1. This coin has not sold publicly since 2003, when it was graded by NGC. Our consignor paid a very strong price to buy it. While the current PCGS Price Guide value is $70,000 and the CAC CPG value is $75,000, this coin, in our opinion, offers a better visual allure than the Battle Born PCGS AU58 CAC that sold a decade ago and the NGC MS61 Goldschmidt-Clapp-Eliasberg-Gardner coin that realized $114,000 in November 2021. This is a very RARE and HISTORIC offering that will NOT present itself again in quite some time. Worthy of another WORLD CLASS COLLECTION. Bid accordingly! Cert. Number 25596557 PCGS # 6972
